The Mutables

THE MUTABLES weaves cutting edge technology for speech production with mythographies of the feminine monstrous to expand and reorient our intuitions for what can be put into words. Using a unique sensor-based instrument for embodied speech called BodyMouth, this eerie performance intertwines bodies and vocals as dancers sound out words phoneme-by-phoneme by enacting specific gestures in sequence, turning the body quite literally into a mouth. Situated at the edge of experimental opera and dance, the piece is inspired by female forest creatures in Balkan folklore called ielele whose voices were said to lead men astray and who could render listeners instantly mute. The project is a meditation on the question What does it mean to have a voice?—a provocation to the bleak histories of totalitarian rule where alternate modes of speech became an urgent form of survival and resistance.

NYFW Bonan Li Collection00: FLOATING LANDSCAPE

Floating Landscape is an immersive runway-performance by New York–based fashion designer Bonan Li, merging sculptural garments, contemporary movement, and live improvised vocals. Each garment functions as a spatial unit—shifting like strata and fluid terrains—dissolving the boundaries between body, fabric, and environment.

Following the runway, guests are invited to stay for an after-party and private showroom. This intimate gathering extends the performance into a celebratory atmosphere, with a live DJ set, light refreshments, and small bites alongside the opportunity to engage more closely with the garments and creative team.

to be free - collab with Sylvain Souklaye at TOPAZ Arts

to be free is a work-in-process by Marie Lloyd Paspe in collaboration with sound & performance artist Sylvain Souklaye. Our showing will be at TOPAZ Arts in Woodside, Queens on Saturday, May 17 at 2:00 PM.

Ignited by the hypervisibility of and surveillance on immigrants, we are interested in what it means to be seen and making with our bodies during this time. ‘to be free’ is a sound-movement choreography of observation and deep listening to the invisible, Sacred, and absent. Through sonic landscapes made by loop pedals, body mics, and vocals, with choreography inspired by the in/visibilities of labour and the subsequent absence of what was — the piece attempts to capture our experiences as transcontinental artists whose families moved to this country for a better life.
